I-94 lane closures between St. Cloud, Clearwater cause delays
Due to road construction begun on September 24 that reduced both directions of travel of Interstate 94 to a single lane between Highway 24 in Clearwater and County Road 75 in St. Cloud, motorists travelling between the Twin Cities Metro Area and St. Cloud will encounter delays.
The lane closures will occur intermittently from sunrise to sunset Mondays through Saturdays through December 1. No closures are currently planned for Sundays.
The closures are needed as crews begin preparatory work for a major project to resurface 7.5 miles of I-94 between Clearwater and St. Cloud next spring and summer.
Major delays are expected, and motorists are advised to plan their travel. Traffic forecasts show backups on westbound I-94 could exceed 20 miles during Friday afternoon and evening rush periods.
Major delays are also expected on westbound I-94 on Thursday afternoons and evenings and possibly midday on Saturdays. On eastbound I-94, increased travel times are likely during morning and evening rush hours.
Motorists are advised to plan alternate routes, use the "zipper merge" during times of slow moving traffic and be prepared to stop. Drivers are reminded to navigate the work zones with caution whenever flashing lights, workers and orange cones or barrels are present.
