Homers highlight pair of Blue Anchors games
Alexandria's Gordy Diekman won his father's tournament as the former Cardinal standout shot an even-par 72 to win the 24th annual Kyle's Lakes Area Classic on May 18 at the Alexandria Golf Club.
Diekman was consistent from the get-go as he shot a 36 on both nines. He had birdies on holes two and eight and an eagle on the par-5 12th hole to highlight his round. He hit a 5-wood over the trees to within three feet to set up his eagle putt. That was enough to help him hold off 2012 winner, Justin Nelson, who finished second with a 74.
Charlie West was the third and final golfer to shoot in the 70s in the Lakes Area Classic. He finished with the fewest putts on his way to a third-place finish of 76.
Diekman and Nelson were separated by one shot heading onto the back. Nelson bogeyed holes three, four and five but got right back in it with an eagle on the par-5 sixth after sinking a 15-foot putt. He also birdied Nos. 11 and 14 on the back, but a double bogey on No. 12 proved to be the difference between the top two.
More than 250 prizes were awarded at the Classic as more than 90 golfers took part in the tournament.
