Dogs and cats, and even a pot-bellied pig, were excited to receive attention at the Lakes Area Humane Society's holiday open house that took place Saturday afternoon.

The "Home 4 the Holidays," event helps to place animals during the holiday season. LAHS is working with more than 2,500 shelters in placing one million pets in loving homes during the holiday season. During Saturday's open house, at least one cat and three dogs were adopted. However, two puppies - possibly 4 weeks old - were brought in to LAHS after a motorist found them, along with two others, in a plastic bag on the side of the road. The two others died. Kristin Klimek, LAHS executive director, stressed that LAHS is available for people who need an outlet for their unwanted pets. "It's better to leave them in a box outside our door than on the side of the road," she said.
