Hegg in race for Pope County attorney
Attorney Douglas R. Hegg has filed for the office of Pope County attorney.
Hegg graduated in 1990 from Jefferson High School in Alexandria and obtained a bachelor of arts degree from Macalester College in St. Paul, majoring in economics with a minor in mathematics. He attended law school at the University of Denver in Denver, Colorado, receiving a juris doctor degree in 2000.
While attending law school, Hegg served as summer clerk for Greggory K. Scott of the Colorado Supreme Court, and clerked for two years for Joseph D. Block and Associates, a mid-sized Denver law firm practicing in the areas of family law, criminal defense and personal injury.
Upon graduation, Hegg returned to Minnesota where he is active in the community, including service on the boards of the Lakes Area Humane Society, Theater L'Homme Dieu and the Alexandria Sertoma Club.
Hegg served as vice president and president on the Humane Society and Alexandria Sertoma Club boards and is the current secretary of Sertoma. He served as vice chairman of the Alexandria Ice Fishing Challenge in 2007 and as chairman in 2008.
Hegg is a real property law specialist certified by the Minnesota State Bar Association and recipient of the Legal Services of Northwest Minnesota's Advocacy Achievement Award (2007).
His practice includes real property law, land use, family law, civil commitments, child protective services, guardian and conservatorships, and probate.
He has served as a Judicare attorney for Legal Services of Northwest Minnesota and as a court appointed Douglas County public defender since 2003.
Hegg is the city attorney for the city of Nelson, a position he has held since 2007. Hegg is admitted to the Minnesota State Bar Association and U.S. District Court (Minnesota).
