Happiness Club members spread May Day cheer
Members of the Alexandria Jefferson High School Happiness Club spread some May Day cheer Thursday.
Donned in their bright yellow smiley face club T-shirts, they divided into groups and set out during their lunch period and again after school to share some smiles.
The group of juniors and seniors meets every Thursday during their school lunch period. For the past month, they have been using that time to assemble hand-made May Day baskets.
Thanks to a grant from the Youth as Resources program through United Way of Douglas and Pope Counties, the students were able to assemble a total of 250 May Day baskets, which included notes, flower seed packets, candy and carnations.
They delivered the baskets at The Senator assisted living facility, Galaxy apartment complex, Viking Towers apartments, Park South Apartments and the Birth Place at the Douglas County Hospital, all in Alexandria.
Youth as Resources is a youth-directed board that determines funding for youth-led, youth administered projects that impact residents of Douglas County.
The JHS Happiness Club is dedicated to promoting happiness in the school and the community. JHS orchestra director Brad Lambrecht is the club advisor.
