Haggerty seeks Pope County attorney post

Attorney and mediator Nan I. Haggerty announced that she will seek election as the next Pope County attorney.

Haggerty runs a regional law office headquartered in Starbuck and lives with her husband, Jon Blocher, and her daughter, Emma, in White Bear Lake Township.

Haggerty graduated from the University of Minnesota with a bachelor of arts degree in international relations and Latin American studies. Prior to attending college, she worked in the Scott County Planning and Zoning Department and ran her own bookkeeping service.

Haggerty graduated from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul with a juris doctorate degree and as a qualified neutral under Rule 114 of the Minnesota General Rules of Practice for the District Courts. While attending law school, Haggerty worked in the governor offices of Arne Carlson and Jesse Ventura, handling the accounting for the governor's mansion, St. Paul and Washington, D.C. offices and serving as an alternative dispute resolution mediator in the Ramsey County housing and conciliation courts.

Upon graduation from law school, Haggerty served as judicial clerk for Casey Christian and Jon Stafsholt in the district courts of Steele and Pope counties. Haggerty's duties in the courts included researching legal precedent and drafting court documents in all areas of law including criminal, family, real property, business, personal injury, juvenile, planning and zoning, mental health and probate.

Prior to opening her own law firm in 2007, Haggerty worked at Velde Law Firm in Alexandria as an associate attorney, predominately in the area of family law and as a financial advisor with Prudential Financial in Alexandria where she obtained specialized training in all types of investments.

Haggerty actively promotes the law, economic development, education, health and the safety of area residents through her law practice and through community service in the following volunteer positions: secretary/treasurer of 16th District Bar Association; board member Pope County H.E.L.P. Council (child abuse prevention); team member Pope County Children's Justice Initiative; co-chair Lakes Area Professional Women Mentoring Committee; president West Central Lakes Chapter of the University of Minnesota Alumni Association; vice-chair West Central Regional Sustainable Development Partnership through University of Minnesota (Natural Resources Committee) and as former Pope County board member for Someplace Safe (domestic violence prevention).

Haggerty is also an active member of the Starbuck Chamber of Commerce, Glenwood Rotary and Glenwood Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce.
