'Great Cravings!' to replace Time Square
A new restaurant will soon be opening in the former Time Square building at 203 22nd Avenue West in Alexandria.
Sue Nelson, owner of Bistro to Go in Alexandria, will be running the new business - "Great Cravings!"
She said it will offer coffee, breakfast sandwiches, hand-dipped ice cream, lunches and its specialty - homemade gourmet doughnuts.
"It will be very family oriented and kid friendly," said Nelson.
The building will undergo a complete change of décor, Nelson said.
She plans to open Great Cravings! by the end of May and already has some key staff people hired and ready to go. "They're an experienced and smiling crew who will offer quick service," she said.
Lisa Bistodeau, former owner of Old Broadway Food and Spirits, will be the general manager.
Nelson said one of her goals is to make the restaurant a "destination location," even drawing people off Interstate 94 to come in and try a doughnut or another unique menu item.
Without giving away the details, she said one of the menu items will be playing off the popularity of the "Big Ole" Viking statue that's an Alexandria landmark.
Nelson emphasized that Bistro to Go will continue at its location at 613 Broadway. It, too, will soon undergo a name change and will be known as Broadway Bistro and Catering Company.
Nelson said she's excited to be opening up Great Cravings! She said plans are already in the works to expand the franchise to other locations in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
This latest restaurant news marks a comeback in the local eatery scene. Bug-A-Boo Bay was sold to new owners John and Caren Timmerman and opened April 30; and Main Street Brewery, owned by Chris Anderson (the chef/owner of Anderson Out-post of Miltona) and Chuck Ronnebaum, has replaced Old Broadway, which had been closed for more than four years.
