Girls' tennis: Osakis edges Melrose in opener
The Osakis tennis team got off to a strong start with a 4-3 win over Melrose on Monday as it tries to replace some talented players off of last year's team.
Taylor Kraemer moved into the No. 1 singles spot left vacant by Brianne Giesler and picked up a hard-fought win over Hailey Brinkman. Kraemer won the first set 6-4 before persevering for a 7-6 (7-2) win in the second. Tonya Hetland and Sabrina Zimmel followed suit in the second and third singles spots.
Janna Juntunen and Lauren Silbernick helped secure the win by getting the lone Osakis win in the doubles lineup. They anchored the No. 1 spot in the lineup and outlasted Kayla Uphus and Michaela Worms, 6-4, 7-5.
"Great start to our season with a win against a very good Melrose team," head coach Ryan Maddock said. "We played well but still have a lot of room for improvement as the season progresses."
