Girls basketball: WCA beats Royalton, Verndale

A second half comeback by the West Central Area girls’ basketball team helped it pick up a 44-41 win over Royalton for its 12th victory this season.

Royalton was up 23-13 at halftime, and for much of the second half they maintained a lead over the Knights. But WCA was able to tie the game thanks to a three-pointer by Tiana Christenson. From there the Knights were able to use some solid offensive possessions to close out the game.

Head coach Beth Hill felt a lack of rhythm on offense was a contributing factor to the Knights falling behind early in the game.

“We did not have a very good showing tonight, but we were able to stick with it and pull out the win,” Hill said.

Abby Van Kempen led the Knights with 16 points; and Holly Van Kempen finished with 14.

The Knights picked up its 11th win this season with a 65-51 nonconference home victory over Verndale.

Most of the game was played at a quick pace, and Hill was happy with the Knights’ ability to score in transition.

“The game was played at a very quick pace. We got up and down the floor quickly and had some nice fast breaks,” Hill said.

Holly Van Kempen led the Knights with 16 points, and Abby Van Kempen scored 11.
