Girls basketball: Chargers keep pace atop LEC
The Brandon-Evansville girls finished off Underwood down the stretch last Friday to secure a 48-44 win after trailing by 10 points in the game.
The Chargers got 17 points from Carrigan Okerlund and 11 points, eight rebounds and five steals from Emma Friedrich. A drive and bucket from Okerlund late in the game put her team up for good as Brandon-Evansville moved to 8-7 overall and to 6-1 in the Little Eight Conference.
“We played well when we had to and came from behind,” head coach Dick Simpson said. “We didn’t shoot very well, but we made plays down the stretch. Give the girls credit for some poise late and pulling it out. Underwood and us always seem to have a close game. They play hard, and we were fortunate to come out ahead.”
Okerlund overcame a sickness that kept her out of school the day before to put up the game-high 17 points. The freshman guard came up big down the stretch to help the Chargers hold on.
“She hit some threes and scored 12 points in the second half,” Simpson said. “She also had two free throws after that two that put us in the lead for good.”
Brandon-Evansville shot just 15-of-45 from the field but also held Underwood to 16-of-42 shooting. The Chargers made five more free throws, which helped them hold on.
The win helped Brandon-Evansville keep pace atop the LEC. Both Parkers Prairie and the Chargers were 6-1 in league play with Battle Lake sitting in third place at 7-2.
Brandon-Evansville was scheduled to be at Battle Lake last night, Tuesday. The Chargers then go to Graceville to play CGB on Thursday before welcoming in Rothsay on Friday and going to Concordia College in Moorhead to play Hawley. This is part of a stretch where Brandon-Evansville will play 10 games in 18 days.
