George Poirier, 84
George Stuart Poirier, 84, died Wednesday April 16, 2014 at Banner Hospice at Grandview Terrace in Sun City West, Arizona.
George, the son of Ray and Faye (Taggert) Poirier, was born August 24, 1929 in Bismarck, North Dakota. George and his family moved to Montevideo, where he graduated from high school in 1947.
He enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Korean War. He returned home and purchased The Daily Reminder from his father.
George married his high school sweetheart, Leona Angrimson on June 26, 1949 in Montevideo. Four children were born from this union, Pam, Michele, Michael and Kim.
George sold The Daily Reminder to his brother Curt in 1959 and moved to Glenwood to purchase the clothing store Glenwear. He expanded his business and opened another Glenwear store in Alexandria in 1968. Then in 1978, George moved his store to the Viking Plaza in Alexandria, where it is currently.
He worked hard and was involved in the community by being an Eagle Scout and a member of the Shriners, Masons, VFW and the American Legion. He and his family were members of First Lutheran Church. George loved the retail clothing industry and truly made it a family business by teaching his children the ins and outs of operating a small business.
George made the time he spent with each of his children special. He always enjoyed all of the holidays with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. When George was able to get away from his business, he enjoyed golfing, playing bridge and fishing trips in Canada. George and Leona also were able to spend their winters in Arizona for a number of years. After semi-retiring, he sold his store to his daughters, Pam and Kim. Together the daughters continue to run the family business at the Viking Plaza in Alexandria.
George was a loving husband, father, grandpa and great-grandpa. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Leona Poirier of Alexandria; daughters, Pam (Gordy) Larson of Alexandria, Michele (Bruce) Anvary of Chaska, and Kim (Gregory) Muzik of Alexandria; nine grandchildren, Melissa (Jon) Larson of Lakeville, Lauren Larson of Savage, Chad (Carissa) Anvary of Minnetonka, Shawn (Kayla) Anvary of Chaska, Jason Anvary of St. Paul, Tiffany Poirier of Austin, Justin Poirier of Austin, Nicole (Kasey) Sayre of Alexandria and Brianna (Chad) Oeltjenbruns of Garfield; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Curt (Gail) Poirier of Clearwater, FL; and sister-in-law, Janet Poirier of Sleepy Eye.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Michael Poirier; and brother, Gene Poirier.
