During his teen years, George left home for San Francisco, where he worked at a shipyard until moving back to St James, Minnesota. Upon his return he started a job at a record shop where he met the love of his life. George married Lorraine "Penny" Miller on June 1, 1946 in New Ulm.

George was the vice president of the Fulda Bank before moving to Nisswa. He and Penny returned to Slayton and started the Farmers Agency of Avoca, where they both worked for 20 years.

George retired and moved to Elbow Lake, where he worked with his son for seven years. George and Penny's last move was to Alexandria in 2007.

George was taken to heaven on August 23, 2013 at age 85 while at Knute Nelson Care Center in Alexandria.

Throughout his life, George was an entertainer. He loved to joke, tease and play his player-piano for everyone to sing along. He enjoyed many pastimes including fishing, hunting and golfing. He restored player-pianos and old cars and enjoyed antiques. George's greatest loves in life were God and his wife Penny, whom he lived for.

He is survived by his wife, Penny; five children, Gerry (Louise) Estrem, Tom (Barb) Estrem, Judy (Craig) Schultz, Jim (Lisa) Estrem and Jane (John) Lippert; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and his half-brother, Gary (Rita) Jadwin.

He was preceded in death by his parents and five siblings.

A private family service was held on August 25, 2013 at New Life Church in Alexandria with Pastor John Taplin officiating.
