Four third-period goals lead Blizzard to 4-2 victory
The Alexandria Blizzard used a third period comeback to take 4-2 victory over the Minnesota Flying Aces Friday night at the Runestone Community Center.
Minnesota led 1-0 heading into the third period when the Blizzard scored four goals to propel them to an eighth victory in the past nine games. Garrett Skinner scored two shorthanded goals in the third period, both assisted by Tom Schmidt, to lead Alexandria to the win.
“Tonight was a little shaky,” Skinner said. “In the third period we finally decided to come play and Tom and I got a couple of lucky chances on some shorthanded goals.”
The Blizzard will wrap up its regular season against Granite City Saturday night in Alexandria before the two teams face off in a three-game playoff series. The Blizzard are hopeful that a win against Granite City could give them some momentum heading into the playoffs.
“They’re always big rivals against us,” Schmidt said. “We don’t like them and they don’t like us, so it’s going to be a good series.”
Blizzard head coach Jeff Crouse expects the upcoming playoff series to be a battle. If Alexandria wins Saturday the two teams will have each won four games in the eight-game season series.
“I definitely think from last year to this year we’ve closed the gap on Granite City,” Crouse said. “If we win tomorrow the season series will be four-to-four with them.”
