The Brandon-Evansville baseball team could not hold on to an early lead in a 9-8 loss at home to Lake Park-Audubon on Friday.

The Chargers scored three runs in both the first and third innings to take an early 6-2 lead against Lake Park-Audubon. The runs did not hold up, however, as the Chargers gave up four runs in the seventh inning and were handed the loss.

Head coach Brian Perleberg said losing the lead in the last inning of the game was tough for the Chargers.

“Losing a three run lead in the last inning is never easy to stomach,” Perleberg said. “Give credit to LPA as they never gave up and cashed in on some timely hits when they needed them most.”

The Chargers also left seven runners in scoring position in the game. Perleberg said the team will have to hit better with runners on base in the future.

“We have to do a better job of closing out a game, both defensively and offensively. We have to put this one behind us and learn from it.”

Kevin Roers led the Chargers’ offense by going 2-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI. Kevin Campbell also had a double in the game and drove in two RBIs.

Starting pitcher Tom Bosek was handed the loss as he went seven innings, picking up seven strikeouts but allowing nine hits and three walks.

The loss dropped the Chargers to 11-4 overall this season.

Chargers see win streak snapped

The Brandon-Evansville baseball team fell 6-3 to state-ranked New York Mills last Wednesday night to snap a five-game winning streak for the Chargers.

Tucker Skoblik got the win for the seventh-ranked Eagles (11-0, 7-0 Park Region) after going all seven innings. He allowed the three runs on six hits and one walk, while striking out three. Damon Temberg, Adam Patron and Brandon Kupfer led the Eagles’ offense with seven hits and three RBIs.

Brandon Christianson started for Brandon-Evansville and went the distance. He allowed nine hits, two walks and struck out two.

The Chargers led 2-1 after one inning behind an RBI single from Kevin Roers and a run-scoring double from Zach Johnson. New York Mills answered with a run in the third, two in the fifth and two more in the seventh to build some breathing room.

“It was exciting to play a game today versus a ranked team like New York Mills,” Chargers head coach Brian Perleberg said. “They are a very solid ball club in all facets of the game. I’m proud of the way my kids battled until the last out was made.”
