Football: Silverstreaks battle hard, but fall to OTC

Email

A very strong Ottertail Central team proved to be just too much for Osakis in their season opener on the gridiron Thursday night as the Silverstreaks fell 20-6.

"I was very happy with our effort against Ottertail Central," said Silverstreak head coach Pat Kalpin. "We know that OTC was a very good football team, and one big key for us was to limit big mistakes.

"We felt if we could do that, it would be a good game. As it turned out, we made too many big mistakes.

"In the first half we lost two fumbles and snapped the ball over our punter's head, which OTC recovered on the 6-yard line," said  Kalpin. "We feel as coaches the mistakes we made in this game are things that we can hopefully correct as the season goes on.

"Again it was a very hard hitting football game and OTC is a very solid team," he said. "We have to do a better job of taking care of the football, and do a better job of tackling on the defensive side."

Ottertail Central opened with a 3-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, kicking the extra point to take the 7-0 lead.

In the second quarter, Osakis saw Chris Ludwig take the ball in from five yards out for the score, but a missed point after left the Silverstreaks trailing by one at the half 7-6.

OTC scored again in the third quarter on a 17 yard run, with the point after good, and in the fourth, the final score came on a 5-yard run. This time the Silverstreak defense blocked the extra point attempt.

"I felt that the team showed many positive things as the game went on. Defensively, I felt our line did a nice job of controlling the line and didn't allow many big plays up the middle. Offensively, we were able to move the football on the ground and completed some very nice passes as well.

"The biggest correction that we have to make is to not turn the ball over," Kalpin noted. "Anytime you have three turnovers in a game against a very good football team, the outcome usually isn't good, and that was our case Thursday night."

Ludwig led the rushing for the Silverstreaks with 12 carries for 42 yards and a touchdown, with Matt Laven connecting on eight of 15 passes for 68 yards and one interception.

Derek Waldvogel was the key receiver on the night as he corralled five passes for 52 yards.

On defense, Wendell Larson was the point leader with 22, while Charlie Jennings had 18 and Chris Ludwig 17, including one fumble recovery and an interception.

The Silverstreaks will be on the road to Murdock to face the KMS Fighting Saints Friday night at 7 p.m.
