The Minnewaska football team got beat badly on the stats sheet but won on the only place that matters in a 14-6 win over Paynesville last Wednesday night.

The Lakers gained just 118 yards of total offense but two big plays were the difference in the game. Both of those came from Jack Schultenover after Paynesville had taken a 6-0 lead in the second quarter. The junior erased that deficit by picking off a pass and taking it 65 yards for a touchdown. He was then on the receiving end of an Austin Ostrander touchdown pass that spanned 45 yards.

"It was a very unlikely win for us," head coach Steve Hill said. "Looking at the statistics of the game, we got trounced. Paynesville is a good offensive team, but we had enough big plays to win the game. Austin Ostrander's punting and our coverage was one reason we were able to give Paynesville a long field each time they got the ball."

The defense took over in the second half behind a strong night from Nathan Snider. He finished with 20 tackles, including 19 solo, and caused a fumble.

"Our entire defense played well most of the night," Hill said. "Taylor Lundebrek and Gary Steffensen had particularly good games. Nathan Snider had another good night."

The win was Minnewaska's fourth straight and sends the Lakers into the playoffs with a 4-4 record. That was good enough to earn them the second seed in the 5AA playoffs. They were scheduled to host seventh-seeded Yellow Medicine East (0-8) last night, Tuesday.
