Football: Lakers edge Eagles 14-12
The Minnewaska football team came out of Madison with its first win of the season last Friday as the Lakers beat Lac qui Parle Valley 14-12.
"It feels great to get a conference win on the road," head coach Steve Hill said. "It was a very exciting game with many outstanding plays by both teams. Everybody played their hearts out and we feel fortunate to get out of there with a win."
Minnewaska led 14-6 after three quarters, but LQPV was able to cut that lead to two on a 19-yard run by Ryan Hoium. That would be all the scoring that either team would do as the Lakers held on for the win.
Mike Kocher ran for 68 yards and a touchdown, and Mike Whittemore completed 9-of-22 passes for 79 yards and a touchdown to help lead the Lakers to a win.
"Mike Whittemore had another good night at the QB position," Hill said. "He had several nice third down pick ups with Nick Molitor. Defensively, he came up with two key fourth quarter interceptions."
Minnewaska travels to Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City this Friday to take on a 3-0 Falcons team. Hill knows that if the Lakers are going to pull off the upset, they will have to limit the amount of big plays they give up on defense. The Eagles' first score against Minnewaska last Friday came on an 80-yard run by Chase Keinig.
"My number one concern for this team is improvement on the defensive side of the ball," Hill said. "We are giving up too many big plays, and we are not tackling very well. We need to be more disciplined on defense."
