First bird's a big one
Eight-year-old Ellie Roers of Alexandria was finally old enough to shoulder and safely shoot her turkey gun this year and was eager to get out in the woods with her grandfather, Rod Froemming, on April 26.
The two were hunting near Garfield when Froemming called a big tom in for Roers. She didn’t miss her opportunity as she bagged this 23.11-pound turkey for the first bird of her life.
Froemming couldn’t quite see the tom from the point of view he was calling for her from, so Ellie knew when to pull the trigger all on her own. Her mother, Janelle Roers, said the bird will be hanging on the wall in a couple months.
