The two men knew each other, according to Police Chief Rick Wyffels.

Sandgren was upset with Baumann because of the way he was talking and treating others at the scene, Wyffels said. During the course of the argument and the fight, Sandgren was stabbed multiple times, Wyffels said.

He was taken to the Douglas County Hospital and later transferred to the St. Cloud Hospital. As of Monday, he remained hospitalized in fair condition.

No one else was involved in the confrontation.

Baumann fled the scene and was later apprehended in Sauk Centre by the Sauk Centre Police Department and the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office. He is being held on first degree assault charges.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and North Memorial Ambulance assisted police officers at the scene.

The Alexandria Police Department doesn’t have any reason to believe anyone else is targeted or in danger as a result of the fight, Wyffels said.

The case is still under investigation and ongoing, the chief added.
