Fergus Falls drops Cardinals 6-1

Nick Partington and Payton Grandgenett teamed up at second doubles to grab the lone victory for the Alexandria tennis team in a 6-1 loss to Fergus Falls on Thursday.

The Cardinals hoped to win a few more matches, but the Otters came to Discovery Middle School ready to play.

“Fergus Falls is a solid team, and we hoped to give them a better match,” head coach Dave Ronning said. “But my hat is off to them as they came to play at a high level.”

Partington and Grandgenett teamed up to win a three set battle 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 against Jake Steen and Chris Bernard of Fergus Falls. Ronning said the duo changed the match by improving their net play after the first set.

“The lone point for the Cards came from Nick and Payton at second doubles, where they started slow, losing the first set, but then got aggressive and countered with strong net play and good serving to get back into the match and win the second and third sets,” head coach Dave Ronning said.

Valentino Grasiosa also attempted to pull off a come-from-behind win against Brady Anderson of Fergus Falls. After losing the first set 6-3, Grasiosa rebounded to grab the second set 6-3. But Anderson stepped up his game and won the final set 6-2.

“Valentino had a close match at third singles, where he lost the first set, won the second set and seemed to have all the momentum going into the third set,” Ronning said. “But his opponent picked up his game and Valentino had no answer.”

The loss dropped the Cardinals to 2-7 overall and 1-5 against CLC opponents.
