Feedlot permit in Evansville Township denied
A variance application for a proposed feedlot project in Evansville Township was unanimously recommended for denial by the Douglas County Board of Adjustment Tuesday night.
Prairie Lakes Farm, LLC, requested the variance for a new feedlot operation consisting of 996 animal units, beef cattle, near the intersection of County Road 1 and Lake Jennie Road.
After the board’s action, Prairie Lakes Farm withdrew its conditional use application for the project.
The facility would have included three 220-by-400-foot open lots, each containing a 40-by-200 foot open front partial-confinement building.
At full capacity, the lots would have housed 830 cow-calf pairs. Plans called to store manure in covered bed-packs within the buildings and temporarily stockpile it until it was applied on the land.
Nearby residents told county officials that they were worried about runoff from the feedlot getting into the Chippewa River, which is less than a half mile away, and into Long Lake.
They were also concerned about air and odor pollution from the feedlot operation and how it may affect the respiratory health of residents in the area.
