Ethel Olsson, 87
Ethel "Lee" Mae Olsson, 87, Parkers Prairie, died Saturday, February 28, 2009 at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria.
Ethel was born November 27, 1921 to Elmer and Katherine (Elsen) Lysaker in La Crosse, Wisconsin. She grew up in La Crosse and graduated from high school in 1939. She attended La Crosse Teacher's College for two years before attending the Kahler School of Nursing in Rochester, Minnesota where she graduated in June 1944.
Ethel was united in marriage to Erling Olsson on May 20, 1944 at Trinity Lutheran Church in La Crosse. Following their marriage she practiced nursing throughout the U.S. as she traveled with her husband who was serving in the U.S. Army. In the 1960s, Lee changed careers and became the children's librarian in Peoria, Illinois until she retired in 1985. Following her retirement, she and her husband moved to his family's farm in Parkers Prairie where she resided until the time of her death.
Music was very important to Lee, playing the French horn in high school, directing the church choir in Decatur and Pekin, Illinois. She received great satisfaction during the 10 years she sang with the Sweet Adelines in Alexandria. Lee kept active physically by caring for her garden of perennial flowers interspersed with colorful annuals. She and her husband were charter members of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Decatur and helped Our Saviors Lutheran Church of Pekin get started. She was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Parkers Prairie.
She is survived by her husband, Erling; a daughter, Leslie White of Marquette, Michigan; a son, Matt Olsson of Parkers Prairie; two brothers, Howard (Doris) Lysaker of Mascoutah, Illinois and David Lysaker of La Crosse, Wisconsin; two grandsons, Daniel White of Portland, Oregon and David White of Marquette, Michigan; along with several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister, Carol.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 5 at 2 p.m. at First Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. John Okan officiating. Music will be provided by organist, Dean Swanson.
Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church.
