Errors doom Osakis in title game rematch
The Osakis Legion baseball team didn't play the way this group of guys know they can play in an 8-2 loss to BOLD during the district tournament in what was a rematch of the Class A state title game on Tuesday night.
Osakis committed five errors in the game and had a few miscues on the bases that turned a tie game after five innings into an 8-2 loss.
"We had a 2-2 game going into the sixth and I thought we were going to take them," head coach Gerry Hoelscher said. "And all of a sudden, we started booting the ball around. Besides that, we had three base running miscues. Had one guy picked off first, another called out when he didn't tag up properly and one guy who started tagging up from third, went halfway and had to come back. It was uncharacteristic."
That made things more difficult on starting pitcher Jordan Frederick. The righty went all seven innings and struck out 13. He allowed seven hits and three walks.
"He pitched well enough to win," Hoelscher said. "The difference in this game is, I've seen BOLD play three times now and every time, what I've noticed is they don't beat themselves. I'm just not sure BOLD beat us last night. We beat ourselves."
Frederick tried to help himself out offensively by reaching base four times on a hit and three walks. Drew Fearing had a double and a triple, while Brandon Giesler added an RBI.
Osakis was forced to regroup with a good opportunity to make the state tournament still within its grasp. BOLD is the host site of this year's state tournament, and Hoelscher said that means BOLD will automatically get a bid to the tournament, so two teams will be coming out of this district. Morris also won on Tuesday night and was scheduled to play BOLD last night, Thursday.
Osakis was scheduled to play Madison for the right to take on the loser of that Morris versus BOLD game. That game will take place tonight, Friday, with a 6:30 first pitch in Montevideo. Osakis knows it needs to play better to extend its season, but it's a group of guys who know they are capable of doing that as they head into some elimination games.
"That's what we said last night," Hoelscher said. "Guys got together, and some of our younger guys are developing some real good leadership skills. One of the kids stepped up last night and said, 'Five errors is not us, and it's not going to happen again. Let's shake it off and get them on Thursday.' I think that's how they feel."
