On Wednesday, May 2, nearly 500 4th grade students from Douglas County area schools will participate in the 19th annual Kids' Water Festival at the Runestone Community Center.

A T-shirt logo contest was held, in which students were asked to submit a logo design. The Kids' Water Festival committee announces that the winner is Eric Klimek, a student in Parkers Prairie.

The overall purpose of the groundwater festival is to help students understand the importance of water resources and how to maintain water quality. Students will have the opportunity to attend a presentation by the Minnesota Science Museum and participate in water resource stations to learn about such things as:

• Wells and well-drilling.

• How the water gets to a house.

• How to determine what is good water and bad water.

• Septic systems.

• Protecting surface and ground water.

Besides the educational aspects of the festival, the students are also exposed to a variety of professions or jobs associated with the environment. Station presenters are 3M engineers, science high school teachers, county extension educators, and individuals who work for the DNR, Soil/Water Conservation Department, Pollution Control Agency, and the Natural Resource Conservation Service.

Parents, community adults, the Jefferson High School Junior Viking Sportsmen, and Golden K members will serve a critical role during the festival, serving as volunteers. Funding for the event has been contributed.
