Eklund wraps up season at state
Alexandria freshman Hannah Eklund experienced her first and what she hopes is not her last taste of the state swim meet at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center on Tuesday afternoon.
Eklund finished 23rd in her debut on the big stage as she finished the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:10.98. She came into the meet with a seed time of 1:09.40. The top 16 individuals in the event advanced to the state finals on Wednesday.
The swim at state was an experience that Eklund hopes to get used to with three more years of swimming left in front of her at the high school level.
“I’m going to work really hard the next few years,” Eklund said after qualifying for the state meet at the Section 6A finals. “I want to go more and keep dropping time. I want to break some records. That would be pretty cool. Get first – that would be pretty nice.”
Eklund has now seen firsthand some of the incredible times that it takes to accomplish that goal of capturing a state title in an event like the 100 breaststroke. Lindsey Horejsi of Albert Lea is just a sophomore and almost broke her own record in posting the fastest prelim time in the event with a 1:00.24. She set the state record last year when she finished in 1:00.16.
The finals of the state swim meet were set to wrap up on Wednesday.
