The Douglas County Extension Committee held its quarterly meeting on Wednesday, July 16 at the Woodland Elementary Community Garden in Alexandria to raise awareness of the garden. Members heard from master gardeners Steve and Diane Henry.

The community garden is a partnership between Douglas County 4-H, District 206 and the Douglas County Master Gardeners.

The students at Woodland start plants out as seeds inside the school in early spring. Eventually, the seeds are placed outside in the garden.

Throughout the summer, District 206 students, Steve and Diane Henry, other master gardeners and 4-H summer intern Lauren Engebretson ensure weeding, watering, and picking are done.

The students also learn about insects, healthy eating, the water cycle, and various vegetables and fruits when they are in the garden.

The Douglas County Extension Committee meets quarterly in January, April, July and October.

Members include Jerry Johnson, Charlie Meyer, Char Rosenow, Catherine Siira, Pat Kalina, Bill Januszewski, Vicki Johnston, Kelly Lund and Ray Wille.
