Donald Merklin, 85
Donald R. Merklin, 85, Alexandria, died March 14, 2009 at Douglas County Hospital.
Donald was born November 24, 1923 to Helena (White) Merklin in Blue Earth County. While small children, he and his brother, Edward "Eddie" moved to St. Joseph's Orphanage in Wabasha. He moved to live with Mary Trisko on a farm in the Carlos area at the age of 9 years, where he lived until he began working with Mike and Myrtle Forster on a farm in Belle River in 1953. He lived and worked as a hired hand for the Forsters until retiring in 1987, at which time he moved into Alexandria where he lived until the time of his death. He attended St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Belle River. He enjoyed listening to polka music and going to the library. He had a real sweet tooth and especially enjoyed candy and cookies. He loved animals, children and was an avid Twins' fan.
He is survived by a brother, Joe Merklin of St. Peter; and a sister, Betty Hemmerling of Fulda.
He was preceded in death by his mother; a sister, Margaret Hayes; and two brothers, Jim Merklin and Eddie Merklin.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 18 at 11 a.m. at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Belle River with Fr. Ralph Zimmerman officiating. Music will be provided by the church choir. Burial will take place at the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jorden Taveirne, Bruce Forster, Doug Trosvig, Jeff Trosvig, Denise Hoppe and Don Thoennes.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday with a 7 p.m., rosary at Lind Family Funeral Home in Miltona and continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
