Discriminatory toward men?

Email

To the editor:

On February 14, 2014, the Echo Press published an article entitled “Most eligible bachelors of Douglas County.” The article started: “Women don’t need men in their lives, but they certainly make the best accessories.”

If the article had been about eligible ladies of Douglas County and said men do not need women in their lives, but they make the best accessories, then people would be outraged and yell sexism and discrimination toward women.

Well, the beginning of the article was sexist and discriminatory toward men. I am a feminist but do not need to put down men in the process. I desire equality and harmony between men and women, despite the history of female oppression.

Editor’s note: The story was meant to be a light-hearted, fun feature for Valentine’s Day. It wasn’t intended to be sexist or discriminatory. The story concluded with a message that being single can be empowering for both men and women.
