Derek Nelson, 24

Derek Kyle Nelson, 24, died suddenly on Sunday, March 1, 2009 while snowmobiling.

Derek was born February 19, 1985 in Alexandria to Kevin and Lois (Nessman) Nelson. He was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Kensington. Derek graduated from West Central High School in 2003.

Derek attended Minnesota State Community and Technical College in Detroit Lakes and earned a degree in neon technology. He worked at J&H signing company in Perham for one year. Derek then attended Alexandria Technical College where he received a professional sales degree. In May 2007 he went to work for Schwieters Chevrolet of Glenwood, where he was a salesperson.

Derek enjoyed snowboarding, skiing, snowmobiling, fishing, hunting, cars, and being a ladies man. He was gifted with the ability to talk to anybody and make friends of all ages.

He is survived by his parents, Kevin and Lois Nelson of Barrett; brother, Chris (Stacy) Nelson of Hoffman; nieces, Layla and Mia, also of Hoffman; grandparents, Elna Nessman of Kensington, and Pat and Wayne Nelson of Barrett; great-grandparent, Ermal Nelson of Hoffman; many aunts, uncles and cousins; and hundreds of friends he made in his journeys.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, March 7 at First Lutheran Church in Kensington with the Rev. Barbara Chapman officiating. Music was provided by soloist, Lynn Bruss and organist, Tricia Saulsbury. Honorary urn bearers were Matt Hanson, Karl Arnquist, Noah Anderson, Ben Fehr and Sean Fraser.
