DeLois Olson, 89
DeLois Ann Olson, 89, died Sunday, February 23, 2014 under the care of her family and Douglas County Hospice at the home of her son and daughter-in-law.
DeLois was born in Farwell to Arthur and Agnes (Rudell) Dahlin on January 4, 1925. She was baptized at Farwell Lutheran and confirmed at Fron Lutheran in Starbuck.
She grew up in Starbuck, graduating from high school there in 1942. She lettered in basketball and participated in choir. DeLois then attended beauty school in Minneapolis.
Upon graduating, she returned to Alexandria to start work as a hair stylist. While there, DeLois met Elmer Olson when he was home on leave from WW II. The two started dating and were married on July 24, 1946 at Fron Lutheran Church.
The couple lived in Alexandria for a short time but soon bought and moved to her grandfathers (John Rudell) farm near Holmes City. Elmer worked for the Douglas County Highway Department out of Holmes City and DeLois stayed home to raise their two sons. She loved living in the country and was a great cook and baker, making cookies and brownies for the boys and fresh-baked bread for Elmer.
They were long-time members of Oscar Lake Lutheran Church, where DeLois was involved with ladies aid, Bible study, quilting and the ladies choir.
DeLois was also a dedicated volunteer for the Douglas County Hospital, serving in that role for nearly four decades. In 2011, she retired from the hospital at the age of 86 after receiving her 5,000 hour pin, an award of which she was especially proud.
When her husband passed away in 2002, DeLois knew it was time for a new stage in life and moved to Bethel Manor Apartments in Alexandria. DeLois was a very social and adaptable person and greatly enjoyed her new home and friends. She seemed to have a special gift when it came to bingo, taking home more than her fair share of quarters. She loved taking long walks with her cousin Jane, although you couldnt really call her a health nut as she wouldnt eat "anything a rabbit would eat" and had a sacred ritual of a bowl of chocolate ice cream before bed each night.
DeLois is survived by her sons, Ronald Olson of Grand Forks, ND and Todd (Andrea) Olson of Alexandria; brother, Dean Dahlin of Denton, TX; and grandson, James Olson of Tacoma, WA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Agnes; husband, Elmer; and infant daughter, Kari
A memorial service was held Saturday, March 1 at Bethany Community Chapel in Alexandria.
