Cumberbatch pins his way to state semifinals
Justin Cumberbatch is headed to the state semifinals for a second consecutive year after pinning Julius Ogunti of Park Center Friday evening.
The match was tied at 2-2 early in the third period when Ogunti took a shot at a takedown. Cumberbatch used the opportunity to put Ogunti on his back and finish the match.
“I knew he was going to be hungry for a shot,” Cumberbatch said. “I was focusing on getting a shot, it was tough. He is a pretty tough opponent, and he fell off guard and I took my opportunity.”
Now that he is in the semifinals, Cumberbatch would like an opportunity to wrestle for the 195 pound state title. To get there he has to advance past Tristyn Hanson of Lakeville North.
Hanson was ranked fifth in the most recent state polls at 195 pounds by The Guillotine wrestling website while Cumberbatch was ranked third.
“I know my semis match is going to be hard, but I am hoping to get to the finals and get my hand raised at the end of the day,” Cumberbatch said.
Alexandria’s Blake Olhausen lost a tough match in the quarterfinals on a last second takedown against Elijah Muedeking of White Bear Lake. The two wrestlers were tied at 1-1 late in the match when Muedeking scored the takedown with less than 10 seconds left.
“We lost a tough one in the quarters with Blake,” head coach Tom Ellison said. “He’s right in that match, and kind of got caught off balance there and lost by a takedown in the closing seconds of the match.”
Olhausen will continue in the state tournament wrestle backs along with Alexandria’s Mike Schluter. Wrestle backs began at 7:30 p.m. Friday night.
