Cumberbatch heads to 195 pound title match

With a 3-2 victory, Alexandria’s Justin Cumberbatch has reached his goal to wrestle for the Class AAA state individual title at 195 pounds this evening.

Cumberbatch solidified his spot in the finals with a third period takedown against Tristyn Hanson of Lakeville North.

Both wrestlers had earned an escape point in the second and third period for a 1-1 tie before Cumberbatch’s takedown with 50 seconds left in the match. Hanson escaped again, but he was unable to score any points to take a lead.

Cumberbatch will square off with Gable Steveson of Apple Valley in the title match. According to The Guillotine wrestling website, Steveson was the top ranked Class AAA wrestler at 195 pounds while Cumberbatch was third.

Individual state championship matches begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday evening.

RYAN STOTTLER

Minnewaska’s Ryan Stottler is headed to the Class A 170 pound title match after defeating Daven Staples of Blackduck/Cass Lake Bena 6-2.

BRENDON COYER

Brendon Coyer of Osakis was unable to advance past nationally ranked Cameron Sykora of Border West in a 10-1 loss in the Class A semifinals at 120 pounds.

HUNTER FICK

West Central Area’s Hunter Fick lost by fall in a 195 pound semifinals match against Vince Johnson of Windom/Mountain Lake.
