Cross country: Bethany Hasz qualifies for Nike Nationals

Alexandria's Bethany Hasz has proven herself against some of the best runners in the state. Now she will get an opportunity to do the same against many of the top runners in the country.

Hasz paced the Alexandria girls' cross country team at the Nike Cross Nationals Heartland Regional this past Sunday as she finished fifth in a talented field. The Cardinal freshman finished in a time of 18:00.99 to qualify for the national race set to run in early December.

Megan Hasz was not far behind as she added a top-10 finish for the Cardinals. She finished in a time of 18:25.18 to take ninth overall. Shakopee's Maria Hauger was in her usual form as she blew the field away with a first-place finish in a time of 17:33.55. That was almost 17 seconds faster than second-place finisher Clare Flanagan of The Blake School.

The Alexandria cross country club finished 21st out of 29 teams at Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls. Karly Betterman was the third fastest Cardinal runner with a time of 20:51.33. Julia Sieling finished behind her at 21:43.32, while Natalie Watkins came across in 22:50.40.

The Nike Cross Nationals feature some of the best teams and individual runners from eight different regions around the country. This year's race to crown a national champion will take place on December 1 at Portland Meadows in Portland, Oregon.
