Brendon and Trenton Coyer are no strangers to the state wrestling tournament, and for the first time the brothers were both rewarded with podium finishes last weekend at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Brendon Coyer pinned Ryan Killeen of Spectrum in the fifth place match at 120 pounds while brother Trenton Coyer lost to Michael Suda of Pipestone Area 10-3 in the fifth place match at 113 pounds to finish sixth.

A pin in his final match was a memorable way for Brendon Coyer to wrap up his state tournament.

“Yeah, I thought it was really cool,” Brendon said.

A year ago, Trenton Coyer made his second straight appearance at the state tournament and Brendon finished in third place at 106 pounds. Head coach Joey Andreasen was happy after two of Osakis’ wrestlers finished the season by placing at state.

“We’re obviously excited to have two place winners here in the tournament,” Andreasen said. “I know this is Trenton’s third time down here, so he was extremely excited to get on the medal stand. Of course, Brendon was on the medal stand again last year, but he jumped up two weights and had an extremely tough way with one of the toughest wrestlers in the country.”

Brendon Coyer started his tournament with three straight victories that sent him to a Class A semifinals match at 120 pounds. In the semifinals, he fell to top-ranked Cameron Sykora of Border West 10-1, and then he lost by a technical fall to Conrad Kondos of Breckenridge in wrestle backs to send him to the fifth place match.

Trenton Coyer had a difficult road to sixth place at 113 pounds after dropping his opening round match to Esteban Teigen of Spectrum, 15-9. He rebounded in wrestle backs to beat Dillon Kubiatowicz of Richland-H-E-G 7-0 and Levi Larkin of West Central Area/Ashby/Evansville 5-1.

Trenton then lost his third wrestle back match 7-5 in triple overtime against Joey Majerus of Zumbrota-Mazeppa, sending him to the fifth place match.

Both the Coyers had high expectations heading into the tournament after Trenton was ranked second in Class A at 113 pounds and Brendon was ranked sixth at 120. Andreasen said the brothers should be pleased with their top-six finishes at the state tournament.

“Obviously they would love to be in the finals, or whatever,” Andreasen said. “But I think if you would have told them at the beginning of the year they would be on the medal stand I think they would be pretty satisfied with that.”

Osakis’ Ryan Engfer started the state tournament strong at 138 pounds after winning a 4-1 decision over Jake Larkin of West Central Area/Ashby/Evansville in three overtimes. From there Engfer lost a major decision to Tyler Keller of Medford 11-0, and then he lost his only match in wrestle backs 5-0 to Nik Borchert of Mille Lacs.
