Cougars season ends in 14C tourney

The Carlos Cougars saw its season come to a close in the Region 14C Baseball Tournament last weekend.

The Resorters East Division was represented by both the Cougars and Long Prairie in the 14C tournament. The Predators won all three of their games last weekend in 14C play to earn a spot in the tournament’s championship game on August 9.

Carlos started the tournament on the losing end of a 10-3 game against the Bertha Blazers on Friday in Perham, sending it to the loser’s bracket for a game against New York Mills.

Jay Schueler was handed the loss for Carlos against Bertha as he allowed five runs in 1 2/3 innings pitched against Bertha. Matt Hoelscher led the Cougars’ offense by going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

The Cougars rebounded for a 13-2 victory against the Millers on Saturday, setting up a Sunday afternoon matchup against Detroit Lakes.

Aaron Noetzelman led the Cougars’ offense against New York Mills, going 4-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBIs.

Mark Hillescheim picked up the victory on the mound in the game as he went five innings and allowed only two hits and one unearned run.

Alexandria’s Pat Leary came on to pitch the final two innings for the Cougars, allowing four hits and one earned run.

The Angels prevailed 6-4 on Sunday, eliminating the Cougars from the Region 14C Tournament.

Long Prairie started its 14C tournament with a 12-2 victory over Bluffton on Friday. The Predators followed that with a 5-2 victory over Detroit Lakes on Saturday and a 7-6 victory over Bertha Sunday to earn a state tournament bid and a spot in the 14C championship game.
