The mission of the Douglas County Library Friends and Foundation is to support and promote the Douglas County Library.

If you've shopped our Used Book Sale in August or have visited the Friends of the Library Book Store in the library (open Monday through Friday), you may wonder how we use the money raised from these and other fundraising projects to meet our mission.

During the past year, we were able to support the library with the following purchases:

• Purchased 235 e-books at a cost of $2,000 for patrons to borrow and read on their Kindles, Nooks or I-Pads.

• $1,000 worth of computer books to update the technology section of the library.

• Two new computers and monitors.

• New furnishings for the Children's Library, including a rug, seating, wall decorations and puzzles.

• A camera.

• Ten task chairs for the computer lab.

In addition to tangible items, we also provide a great deal of programming.

Friends of the Library has funded the Summer Reading Program for grades K-6 for several years by providing materials, prizes, performers and treats. Last year's theme was "One World, Many Stories."

The library staff is busy preparing for the coming summer's program, "Dream Big," which the Friends group will again fund.

Children's programming that we supported during the school year included Gingerbread Houses (a teen program), Pumpkin Carving, Wonder Weavers and a Dr. Seuss party.

We have not forgotten our future readers. Because we know the love of reading can never begin too early, we provide each baby born at Douglas County Hospital with a "baby reader" containing nursery rhymes and finger plays.

We provide programming for the public through our own efforts and by cooperating with Community Education. We worked with Community Education in the "Everyone Has a Story" series last fall by bringing author Odell Bjerkness to the library for a presentation.

This was the second year we partnered with others to bring a Community Read to Alexandria. This year's book was The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien. One of our contributions to this event was to purchase and provide free of charge 50 copies of this book to be circulated among the public.

We also showed the movie In Country and discussions/presentations related to the book were held at the library.

We brought two additional authors to the library this past year, including mystery writers, David Housewright (Practice to Deceive and The Taking of Libbie, SD) in October and Jimmy Olsen (Things in Ditches and The Poison Makers) in April. These events were open to the public as well as Friends of the Library members.

On May 2, Friends of the Library will hold its annual meeting at 7 p.m. in the library meeting room. All Friends members are invited to attend. Jill Johnson, author of Little Minnesota - 100 Towns Around 100 will be the featured speaker.

Join the fun, join the Friends!
