Congenital heart defect awareness walk set for September 7
Lasting Imprint Inc., a local nonprofit organization that supports families of children with congenital heart disease (CHD), will host the fourth annual CHD Awareness Walk on Saturday, September 7 at Alexandria City Park.
Registration will be 8 to 9 a.m., with the walk from 9 to 10 a.m. and children's activities from 10 a.m. to noon.
The walk will recognize and honor local children and adults who have lost their battle with a CHD and the families that were affected by their loss.
The event will feature a two-mile awareness walk, music, food vendors and numerous children's activities including face painting, a balloon artist, bounce house, fire truck and more.
CHDs are the most common birth defect and are the number-one cause of death from birth defects during the first year of life, according to Lasting Imprint.
At least one in 100 infants born each year have a heart defect. Twice as many children die from congenital heart disease in the U.S. each year than from all forms of childhood cancers combined.
Registration for adults is $25 (includes a T-shirt) and kids 16 or younger are free (no T-shirt). To register or make a donation, visit www.lastingimprint.org and click on "Events."
