Rehearsals are under way for the Jefferson High School (JHS) musical, Little Shop of Horrors.

The play tells the story of Seymour Krelbourn, a poor young man working at a run-down flower shop on skid row when he encounters a miracle. He discovers an alien plant after a total eclipse of the sun.

After bringing the plant to the store, he gains fame, fortune and love. The only defect is that the plant feeds on human blood. Seymour and the plant make a deal that if the plant continues to bring Seymour positive attention, he will continue to feed it human bodies.

Eventually, the evil plant eats Seymour and his close friends and acquaintances.

Performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturday, April 26 to 28 at 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, April 29 at 2 p.m. at Discovery Middle School auditorium in Alexandria.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and are available at the JHS activities office. All seats are reserved.

In The SpotLight

Cast and Crew of Little Shop and Horrors are participating in the SpotLight Musical Theatre Program, a Hennepin Theatre Trust initiative that supports high schools that present musical theater.

The program recognizes achievement by students and schools in several categories, including outstanding performance in leading, supporting and featured roles; outstanding performance by a chorus, dance ensemble and student orchestra; outstanding overall performance of a musical; and outstanding overall production of a musical.

In addition to being an honors program, SpotLight benefits include the opportunity to work with theater educators and musical theater professionals who offer training, insight through critical feedback, on-site school workshops and a collaborative conference.

If Little Shop of Horrors receives an outstanding award, cast and crew will perform with the SpotLight program at the Orpheum in Minneapolis on June 11.
