The Chargers got off 77 shots but made just 22 of those. They also hit just 3-of-13 free throws on a night when the Eagles countered by shooting 52 percent (28-of-55) from the floor.

“We just really couldn’t stop them,” head coach Dick Simpson said. “They made shots…we still scored 51 points despite shooting 28 percent. Defensively, their height kind of bothered us.”

Sisters Ellie and Lydia Rutten were too much to handle as they combined for 40 points. Ellie led the way with 22. Lydia added 18, while Lydia Irons had 17 points for the Eagles.

Carrigan Okerlund was one of two Brandon-Evansville players in double figures. She had 15, while Emma Friedrich added 10 points and 10 rebounds, nine of those came on the offensive end. New York Mills outrebounded the Chargers 49-40 on the night. Melissa Haseman added eight points and nine rebounds, while Megan Kokett led the defense with five steals.

“I thought the story of the game was our inability to shoot,” Simpson said. “We just had a tough time putting the ball in the hoop. Then we had some defensive lapses, which cost us some buckets.”

The win moved New York Mills to 9-3 overall and dropped the Chargers to 6-5. Brandon-Evansville has two more games this week as Ashby comes into Brandon for a Little Eight Conference game tonight, Friday. The Chargers then go to the University of Minnesota-Morris on Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. game against Ortonville.
