Cities, schools elect their leaders

The votes have been tallied and the top vote-getters in local towns and school board races are likely preparing for their first-go at public office or settling in for another term.

This article reports results on contested races in: Brandon, Carlos, Garfield, Kensington, Miltona, Nelson, Osakis and Brandon Township; a write-in vote in Millerville; and the following area school districts: Brandon, Minnewaska, Osakis, Parkers Prairie and West Central Area.

CITY OF BRANDON

The top vote-getters in the Brandon City Council race are Michael Ranweiler with 205 votes and Brian Fuchs receiving 152 votes. The two edged out Aaron Lund, who ended the night with 84 votes.

The city's liquor license question asked voters if they support the city council being allowed to issue private on-sale licenses to hotels, clubs and restaurants for the sale of intoxicating liquor. Voters approved with 205 "yes" votes and 63 "no" votes.

BRANDON TOWNSHIP

Voters in Brandon Township were asked if the township clerk and treasurer should become appointed positions. Voters approved the measure with 222 "yes" votes and 188 "no" votes.

CITY OF CARLOS

Ervin "Herby" Dahl was elected mayor of Carlos with 181 votes. Dahl edged out fellow candidate Daniel Plowman, who earned 87 votes Tuesday.

Todd Burgess and Jason Thimmesh were elected to serve the Carlos City Council. Burgess received 174 votes and Thimmesh picked up 129 votes. The third candidate in the race, Richard Pierson, had 76 votes.

CITY OF GARFIELD

Dan Kalina was elected to serve as the mayor of Garfield. Kalina received 92 votes and his challenger, Gaye Mounsdon, received 76 votes.

CITY OF KENSINGTON

Kensington's City Council will include Amanda Kraemer and Brian Randt; Kraemer picked up 90 votes and Randt earned 69 votes. Candidate Michael Johnson received 66 votes.

CITY OF MILLERVILLE

The Millerville mayor was determined by write-in votes. According to City Clerk Jennifer Lysfjord, Bryan Tolifson was re-elected with 34 votes.

CITY OF MILTONA

Top vote-getters in the Miltona City Council race are Rick Alton with 148 votes and Alan Bettermann, who received 121 votes. Kirk M. Smith was also on the ballot and he received 51 votes.

CITY OF NELSON

Voters in the city of Nelson elected Beverly Hansen with 60 votes and Michael Erickson with 55 votes to serve on the city council. Jason Karl was also on the ballot and received 31 votes.

CITY OF OSAKIS

Osakis City Council incumbents Jerry Olson and Kyle Kostrzewski were re-elected Tuesday. Voters in Douglas and Todd counties cast ballots in this race; Douglas County votes are printed next to the candidate's name and vote totals are in parentheses. Olson received 473 (531) votes and Kostrzewski earned 435 (485) votes. Larry Dillehay was also on the ballot but earned just 197 (212) votes.

Both ballot questions pertaining to the city issuing liquor licenses were approved by voters. On question 1, which asked if the city council should be allowed to issue private on-sale licenses to hotels, clubs and restaurants for the sale of intoxicating liquor, there were 573 (631) "yes" votes and 184 (211) "no" votes.

On question 2, which asked if the city council should be allowed to issue "on-sale" licenses to hotels, clubs and restaurants for the sale of intoxicating liquors at retail on Sunday, there were 472 (521) "yes" votes and 286 (322) "no" votes.

BRANDON SCHOOL BOARD

Voters in Douglas and Otter Tail counties cast ballots in this race; Douglas County votes are printed next to the candidate's name and vote totals are in parentheses.

Four people were elected to serve as at-large members of the Brandon School Board: Cheryl Schaffran, 655 (659) votes; Timothy Lauthen, 647 (649); Kevin Challes, 511 (513); and Arthur Vinson, 502 (503). Chad Way was also on the ballot and received 455 (455) votes but he was not elected.

A special election held for a school board member at large resulted in a win for Michael Randt, who received 516 (518) votes. Challenger Kim Fuchs picked up 395 (397) votes in the race.

MINNEWASKA SCHOOL BOARD

Voters in Douglas, Otter Tail and Pope counties cast ballots in this race; Douglas County votes are printed next to the candidate's name and vote totals are in parentheses: Lonnie Hoffman, 30 (3,076); Jeff Holtberg, 26 (2,973); Robert Mork, 24 (3,111); Randy Kinney, 23 (2,178); and Jim Peters, 19 (2,564). With district-wide totals, the top four vote-getters are: Mork, Hoffman, Holtberg and Peters.

OSAKIS SCHOOL BOARD

Two Osakis School Board incumbents will return to serve the board - Shari Maloney and Pat Hildebrandt. Residents in Douglas, Pope and Todd counties voted in this race. Douglas County vote totals are printed after the candidate's name and district-wide vote totals are in parentheses: Shari Maloney, 774 (1,259); Pat Hildebrandt, 571 (956); Genny Maus LeBrun, 667 (1,140); and Craig Cody was also on the ballot, but not elected, and he received 532 (899) votes.

PARKERS PRAIRIE SCHOOL BOARD

Residents in Douglas and Otter Tail counties voted in the Parkers Prairie School Board race. Douglas County vote totals are printed after the candidate's name and district-wide vote totals are in parentheses: Mary Peterson, 262 (1,064); Jeffrey Samuelson, 203 (808); Glenn Cornish, 187 (797); and Meagan Moen, 212 (768) was also on the ballot, but was not elected.

WEST CENTRAL AREA SCHOOL BOARD

Residents in Douglas, Grant, Otter Tail, Pope and Stevens counties voted in the West Central Area School Board race. Douglas County vote totals are printed after the candidate's name and district-wide vote totals are in parentheses: Jill Beuckens, 279 (1,511); Daryl Amundson, 187 (1,507); Chad Biss, 161 (1,764); Steven Martineau, 124 (1,497). Tina Lindquist, 153 (1,221) and Richard Toms, 177 (985) were on the ballot but not elected.
