Choose correct child safety restraint

To the editor:

The first priority when getting in a vehicle should be child passenger safety, because we want to protect our children. Each year, more than 1,200 children younger than 14 have died due to incorrect child seating.

According to the Child Center for Disease Control and Prevention website, placing children in the proper seating reduces the risk of death or injury by 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for toddlers.

Each child care provider should go through child passenger safety class and parents along with all drivers who are transporting young children should be aware of the proper way to transport a child in a car seat.

At least 72 percent of people use car seats and restraints incorrectly. This statistic is too high and by taking the time to be informed, we can make sure all children are traveling safely.
