Charles Bertrand, 67
Charles Basil Bertrand, 67, rural Evansville, died Saturday, March 7, 2009 at his home.
Charles was born November 19, 1941 at Wright Hospital in Fergus Falls to Raymond G. and Ruby M. (Larson) Bertrand. He was baptized on December 7, 1941 and later confirmed at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Brandon. Chuck grew up on a farm in Lund Township, rural Evansville.
He worked for Carlson Construction of Evansville and then the Sioux Land Dressed Beef of Fargo. Chuck and Jane Christensen were married on May 18, 1963 at St. Ann's Catholic Church by Fr. Peterka. They made their home in West Fargo for one year, then lived in Sabin until 1966 when they moved to Woodbury. While in Woodbury, Chuck worked 30 years for the Sunstar Dressed Beef in South St. Paul. He then began employment as a custodian for 16 years with the University of Minnesota. With this job he was a member of the Teamsters. Chuck enjoyed work and was always known as a hard worker. In 2002 he retired and they made their full-time home west of Evansville.
Chuck enjoyed life. He always loved horses and had belonged to many saddle clubs, including the Ashby Range Riders. He trained horses and also made horse carts. He loved the outdoors, archery, four wheeling, snowmobiling, motorcycling and their motorcycle trips and also enjoyed boating up and down the St. Croix and Mississippi Rivers. He bowled, loved to dance, played cards and the Aggravation game. Chuck loved company and visiting with family and friends. He and Jane liked to travel and especially enjoyed their Alaskan cruise last summer with their son and daughter-in-law.
Chuck is survived by his wife, Jane; four children, Robert (Mary) Bertrand of Sauk Centre, Susan (Tony Gulden) Bertrand of St. Paul, Randy Bertrand and Debra Bertrand, both of Woodbury; six grandchildren, Charles, Kathryn, William, Steven, Jesse and Travis Bertrand; two great-grandchildren, Taylor and Vincent Bertrand; two brothers, James (Marie) Bertrand and Dan (Suzanne) Bertrand; two sisters, Bonita (Ralph) Johnson and Pauline (Greg) Lehrke, all of Evansville; sister-in-law, Bobbi Bertrand of Woodbury and brother-in-law, John Erickson of Clitherall; and by nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Ruby Bertrand; brother, Eugene; and sister, Mary Erickson; two infant siblings, Susan and Gregory; and by father and mother-in-law, James and Margaret Christensen.
Services are Wednesday, March 11 at 2 p.m. at Christina Lake Lutheran Church, rural Evansville, with the Rev. Carl Ulrich officiating.
Visitation is one hour prior at the church.
Burial will be at Christina Lake Cemetery in rural Evansville.
