Chargers take first at Bertha-Hewitt
The Brandon-Evansville volleyball team was able to put together a team effort and take first place at the Bertha-Hewitt volleyball tournament on Saturday.
The Chargers found themselves in a championship match against host Bertha-Hewitt and won in three sets. The win gave the Chargers revenge for a loss to Bertha-Hewitt earlier that day in the tournament.
“We hit well for the tourney. We passed in serve receive and free ball very well,” head coach Kelly Olson said. “Our defense came up with great plays at the net and in the back row when we really needed them, and minus the first match versus Bertha, our serving was great.”
The Chargers started the tournament with a two-set 25-23, 25-21 victory over Ashby. They followed that up with a 25-21, 25-19 win against Pillager.
The Chargers lost their only match of the day in their third match to Bertha-Hewitt 25-19, 25-22. Olson said they did not serve well enough to pull out the victory.
“With Bertha up next we did everything right except keep our serves in,” Olson said. “A team like Bertha is too good to beat if you don’t put everything together, and we didn’t.”
The Chargers followed that with a tie against Eagle Valley.
But they bounced back to beat Verndale 25-21, 25-22 to set up a rematch with Bertha Hewitt in the championship. There the Chargers won in three sets 25-22, 22-25, and 15-13.
Olson said the team took a timeout tied 10-10 in the third set and focused on scoring the final five points of the match to win the championship.
“It was not easy, but we got it,” he said. “Caroline Jansen took a set from Kinsley Randt and crushed it to seal the victory. What a great day for the girls.”
Jansen led the Chargers with 52 kills in the tournament, followed by Emma Friedrich with 43.
Randt had 143 assists in the match, and Megan Kokett led the team defensively with 60 digs.
The Chargers will play their final home match of the season Thursday against Battle Lake.
