The Brandon-Evansville baseball team has a young roster, but the Chargers didn’t make many youthful mistakes in a 10-0 win over Ashby in the season opener last Thursday.

Junior Tom Bosek shut down the Ashby lineup to secure the win. Bosek went six innings and struck out nine. He walked three and hit two more, but the Arrows managed just one hit off of him from Blake Ohren on a two-out double in the sixth.

“We received a one hit pitching performance from Tom Bosek and the defense played errorless ball,” head coach Brian Perleberg said. “I was pleased to see our entire lineup contribute in this game both offensively and defensively. It was a true team effort and an exciting way for us to open the 2014 season.”

The Chargers got 13 hits and multiple hits from four different players. Brandon Christianson went 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and a run scored. James Huisman was 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Zach Johnson went 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored and Christian McGaffey added two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Cody Lund and Kevin Roers also combined for two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored.

“With a young team this year, we had a lot of nervous energy heading into this first game,” Perleberg said. “Fortunately, we were able to do a nice job of putting the ball in play, and we were able to put pressure on in every inning.”

Ashby had quite a bit of inexperience in its starting lineup as well with just five starters returning. That showed in the opener as the Arrows committed six errors to help out the Chargers.

“It is early in the season and it showed tonight,” head coach Chad Akerson said. “We will continue to get better as the season progresses and look forward to some better baseball weather moving forward. Reed Hanson and Morgan Wing did a nice job throwing the ball over the plate today, but [we] didn’t give them much help while committing six errors.”
