Chargers down CGB
The Chargers baseball team improved to 3-0 on the young season by withstanding the cold and edging Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley 7-5 on Monday night.
The Chargers used a five-run third inning to open up a two-run lead. They added single runs in the fourth and the sixth and that was enough to hold off CGB after the Wolverines scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning.
“We were able to get some timely hitting and did a good job of running the bases and playing small ball,” Chargers head coach Brian Perleberg said. “Brandon Christianson took advantage of his first pitching opportunity of the year by giving us six innings of work and kept CGB from putting together any big innings. James Huisman came on in relief and got the job done against the heart of CGB’s lineup. His defense backed him up nicely as well in that last inning.”
Christianson allowed 10 hits, but limited the damage done by walking just one. He struck out four, while Huisman got the save by issuing just one walk in an inning of work.
Christianson and Kevin Campbell each had two hits. Christianson added an RBI, while Campbell scored twice. Huisman added two runs, an RBI and a stolen base, while Kevin Roers went 1-for-2 with two sacrifices, three RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base.
“We were fortunate to be able to play errorless baseball today when the temperature was in the 20s and the wind was blowing constantly,” Perleberg said. “It takes a lot of mental and physical toughness to get through days like today. I’m proud of the focus we were able to maintain.”
The Chargers also didn’t let some high strikeout totals from CGB’s Keane Turner frustrate them. Instead, they found a way to get past them and score seven runs, four earned, off one of the better arms in the conference.
“Keane Turner pitched very well for CGB, striking us out a dozen times,” Perleberg said. “He is a much-improved pitcher from last year, and we had to work hard to manufacture runs against him. He is easily one of the top pitchers in the Pheasant Conference this year.”
