Chargers clinch share of Pheasant Conference title
The Brandon-Evansville baseball team is still in first place in the Pheasant Conference standings and clinched at least a share of the title, despite its first loss of the season in league play earlier this week.
The Chargers got back on the winning track on Monday after two straight losses with a 15-6 win over Hancock before falling 4-1 against Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley on Tuesday.
“The difference in the game came in the bottom of the fifth inning when we walked David Moberg and Keane Turner with two outs and Damon Gibson came up next and belted a three-run homer,” Brandon-Evansville head coach Brian Perleberg said. “That’s the difference in your ballgame. Zak Adelman threw a dandy game for CGB and Cody Lund gave us the innings we needed out of him.”
Lund took the hard-luck loss for the Chargers. James Huisman and Brandon Christianson each went 2-for-3, while Kevin Roers and Tom Bosek also collected hits.
Monday’s game was a different story for the offense as the Chargers scored five runs in three separate innings on the back of 15 hits. Roers went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Christianson, Lund and Zach Johnson all had two hits apiece.
“Through the first five innings, we played solid baseball,” Perleberg said. “James Huisman was pitching well, our defense was making plays and the offense was putting the ball in play while putting pressure on their defense.”
Huisman allowed just one run over five innings of work. He struck out one and walked just one on his way to scattering four hits. His defense played well behind him until the later innings when Hancock tried to make a comeback.
The Owls scored all six of their runs over the final three innings, but the Chargers’ offense was too much for Hancock to overcome.
“We had trouble carrying momentum into the last two innings as we became sloppy on defense and didn’t pitch as effectively as we need to when trying to close out games,” Perleberg said. “But in the end, I was proud of our effort tonight as the boys found ways to get it done.”
The Chargers still hold a two-game lead in the Pheasant Conference at 9-1, with Wheaton-Herman-Norcross and Ortonville both sitting at 7-3. That guaranteed them at least a share of the Pheasant title with games against Hillcrest yesterday, Thursday, and Wheaton-Herman-Norcross on Friday.
