Chargers 1-2 at Minnewaska invitational
The Brandon-Evansville softball team picked up a victory over section opponent Parkers Prairie on Friday before going 1-2 at the Minnewaska Invitational softball tournament on Saturday.
The Chargers won the section game Friday despite only picking up four hits on offense. Head coach Kasi Huschle attributed the victory to starting pitcher Kinsley Randt’s ability to pitch out of some Panthers’ rallies during the game.
“Kinsley threw well for us and worked out of some tough situations, and with the help of our defense stranded nine Panther runners,” Huschle said. “It’s nice to see the girls battle and put together some nice rallies throughout the game.”
Emma Friedrich picked up two of the Chargers’ four hits in the game while scoring a run. Kinsley Randt used one hit to drive in two RBIs, and Morgan Stelzer also hit a home run.
The Chargers started the weekend invitational tournament by losing a close game to Minnewaska 9-7.
The Chargers led by five runs in the fifth inning, but Minnewaska’s bats were too much in the comeback victory.
“We came out strong and led by five in the fifth inning, but Minnewaska didn’t stop battling and it paid off for them,” Huschle said. “I knew going into the game Minnewaska would be a very tough team and they proved me right.”
Morgan Stelzer went 3-for-4 for the Chargers with a double and two runs scored. Emma Friedrich was 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs.
In the second game of the tournament, Brandon-Evansville was unable to keep Ottertail Central off the scoreboard during an 11-1 loss.
Emma Friedrich struggled as the Chargers’ starting pitcher, allowing seven earned runs over two innings.
“They were a very tough team who hit the ball hard and played solid defense,” Huschle said. “It was nice to see a young pitcher in Lizzy Friedrich come out and throw well for us when we needed her to.”
Lizzy Friedrich also was 2-for-2 at the plate, driving in the team’s lone RBI.
But Brandon-Evansville turned things around in its final game Saturday, picking up a 9-3 victory over Long Prairie-Grey Eagle.
The Chargers used 13 hits to drive in nine runs, and Kinsley Randt tossed seven innings while allowing zero earned runs.
“Solid hitting and aggressive base running helped us to take this one,” Huschle said. “Kinsley threw well again with seven strikeouts.”
Stelzer was 3-for-5 in the game with two doubles, two runs scored and a stolen base. Kennedy Lund was 2-for-3, driving in two RBIs and stealing two bases.
