For most events, students must memorize two pieces, one from a repertoire list of American composers. Ratings earn points each year (superior, 5; excellent, 4; etc.). When 15 points are earned a gold cup is awarded.

Some of the categories in this year’s festival are piano solo, duet, concerto, hymn; organ solo, hymn; flute solo, concerto; violin, viola, cello solo; guitar solo; vocal solo; music theory; and improvisation. There are 204 students and six adults pre-registered in 256 events.

A silver cup may be earned by adults participating in the festival also from the same repertoire lists, without the memorization requirement.

The festival is sponsored by the Minnesota Federation of Music Clubs and the National Federation of Music Clubs.

Member teachers are from Alexandria, Brandon, Clearwater, Dalton, Fergus Falls, Osakis and St. Cloud. They are Ruth Aaseng, Jordyn Anderson, Michelle Anderson, Barbara Ask, Marcia Benson, Diane Braud, Dawn Carlson, Kjersten Cook, Amy Engel, Karen Erickson, Mercedes Hagen, Annette Helder, Shirley Holzer, Roxanne Klemetson, Denise Larson, Marlene Larson, Leila Preston, Kaele Rogers and Kristi Wussow.

A recital will be held on Sunday, February 23 at 5 p.m. at Calvary Lutheran Church in Alexandria by those students who earn superior ratings. The public is welcome to attend.
