Cards roll in 8AAAA opener
The Alexandria football team looked like a much different team on Tuesday night than the one that started the season 1-5.
The Cardinals dominated up front against Sauk Rapids-Rice as they went up early and pulled away late in a 42-16 win in the Section 8AAAA opener. The win sets up a rematch with top-seeded Rocori on Saturday.
Steffen Morical continues to put up huge numbers in the second half of the season. He scored four touchdowns through the first three quarters tonight. That gave his eight touchdowns in the last two games.
"It's all the line," he said. "It's all the backs. Everyone had a good night tonight."
Alexandria led 14-13 with 6:10 left in the first half before the Cardinals took control of the game. They outscored the Storm 28-3 the rest of the way as the Alexandria running game started to wear down the Sauk Rapids defense.
Gideon Burnham added a touchdown run to give his team a 21-13 lead at the half, and Nick Knoblach put the finishing touches on the win with an interception return for a touchdown late in the fourth.
"We were definitely ready to go," head coach Mike Empting said. "It was fun. Rolling on offense. Offensively, the kids are just playing so well. The offensive line is doing so well right now, the backs are blocking for one another and [quarterback] Logan [Serum] threw the ball well the few times we did throw the ball."
The win was the third straight for the Cardinals. The last loss they suffered came against Rocori in week six. Alexandria will now have a chance to avenge that on a bigger stage this Saturday.
