The Alexandria girls’ basketball team celebrated the history of its program at Jefferson High School last weekend by recognizing alumni at its annual holiday tournament.

Next year, students will be moving into the brand new Alexandria Area High School, but the tournament gave the Cardinals an opportunity to share the final season in the JHS gymnasium with its former players.

“It was really neat to see the girls,” head coach Wendy Kohler said. “We have such a rich tradition here at Jefferson High School.”

Unfortunately, the Cardinals were unable to hand the alumni a win in the third place game of the tournament against Moorhead. But Kohler quickly forgot her disappointment when she saw about 30 former players take the JHS court.

“It takes a lot for me to be able to turn right after a tough loss like that, but seeing all those girls just made me smile,” she said. “It made me remember why I’m in this coaching profession.”

After multiple state tournament runs and dozens of winning seasons, Kohler had many memories about the players in her 29 years as head coach on the Alexandria sidelines. She announced many of those memories along with the players’ names for the tournament crowd.

“As I saw each one, something came to my mind about something that had happened,” Kohler said. “Those were 30 of the hundreds and hundreds of girls that I have coached. I never will forget anything about the teams or any of the girls.”
